ROBIN PURLLANT
New Zealand Artist
As a painter based on Auckland's North Shore I have developed
two unique styles:
STYLE ONE is representational, loosely autobiographical
and combines lots of different mediums. The starting point is either
a literary or a musical source, both of which are combined with
a personal life event to produce an artwork that is multi dimensional,
often metaphorical and full of memorable detail. I have not attempted
to purely illustrate any of the sources but tried to focus on and
bring out the emotional aspects of the situations and events. A
knowledge of these events and sources isn't that important in appreciating
the paintings - the title and detailed description will supply
all those questions if necessary.

STYLE TWO is abstract and centres on the visualisation
of numerical sequences. The relationship between numbers and mathematical
proportions has always interested me. As a London Art Student I
was studying Renaissance drawings at the British Museum when I
came across Albrecht Durer's engraving "Melancholy".
In the top right hand corner was a numerical diagram which fascinated
me. Although the engraving was full of symbolism, this diagram
which is a magic square of 16* led me into the whole field of numerology,
numerical sequences and magic squares. The mysterious relationship
between numbers has for centuries attracted scientists and philosophers.
After extensive research I developed a system of visualising any
given series of numbers and proportions. This system relies on
extremely accurate colour grading and balance. By carefully measuring
and combining liquid colours and then laying out the results in
a strict mathematical grid I can visualise any numerical sequence.
* A Magic Square refers to a numerical diagram (usually a square)
that has a sequence of numbers distributed in its cells. When the
numbers in each row, column or major line are added, the sum is
always the same.
